Check the roads and cities on your route before buying a toll pass. Some charge motorcycles, some exempt them, and a bridge or tunnel can have its own arrangement. An emissions sticker answers a different question: whether the bike can enter a particular zone.

Choose a country below for the motorcycle rules, then check the operator for each charged crossing.

1. Ask four questions before buying anything

For each road or zone, find four answers:

  • Access: can this type of motorcycle enter at your arrival time?
  • Payment: does it pay, and by which method?
  • Registration: must you register the plate or emissions documents first?
  • Validity: does the purchase cover your dates, direction and road section?

If a reseller’s menu has no motorcycle option, ask the operator before buying a car product.

2. Vignette countries do not all treat motorcycles alike

A vignette pays for a road network over a set period. These European examples show the different motorcycle requirements:

Country What a rider needs
Austria Motorcycle category A on vignette-covered motorways and expressways; special toll sections are separate. ASFINAG
Switzerland An annual sticker or e-vignette for covered motorways and expressways. Swiss customs
Slovenia Class 1 for a single-track motorcycle on covered roads; a three-wheeler with track width above 50 cm uses class 2A. Vignette classes
Czechia Motorcycles are exempt from the electronic vignette. Official portal
Luxembourg No motorcycle Eurovignette: that charge covers goods vehicles and combinations with a maximum authorised mass of at least 12 tonnes. Luxembourg customs

The Swiss vignette runs from 1 December before its printed year through 31 January after it, with no short-stay version. A motorcycle’s trailer needs no separate vignette. Swiss customs

Buying an Austrian annual or two-month digital vignette as a consumer through ASFINAG’s shop or app means waiting until at least the eighteenth day after purchase for validity. One-day and ten-day products can start immediately; distributor, tollbooth and vending-machine purchases have no such waiting period. Check the confirmed start date. Digital-vignette guidance

Slovenia’s former H5/H6 coastal roads are outside the light-vehicle vignette network from 1 January 2026 until the Koper–Dragonja expressway is completed. Check the actual road, including your return route. Government announcement

3. Check bridges, tunnels and ferries individually

Norway: motorcycles and mopeds pass automatic road-toll stations free. Participating AutoPASS-ferje ferries have separate fares: a motorcycle prepayment account can use number-plate photographs without a tag. Register in the 0–8 m category; the bike’s trailer or sidecar adds no charge under that scheme. Road exemptions · Ferry payments

Iceland: motorcycles use the Vaðlaheiði tunnel near Akureyri without paying its toll. Operator FAQ

Malaysia: motorcycle tolls were abolished on both Penang bridges and at Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Malaysia–Singapore Second Link from 1 January 2019. Singapore’s charges are separate. Ministry of Works

For a hired bike, ask how tolls are billed and whether the rental company adds a processing fee before registering the plate yourself.

London motorcycles must meet ULEZ Euro 3 NOx or pay the daily charge. Register a non-UK bike’s compliance with TfL before travelling, even if it meets the standard; keep its registration certificate and any required manufacturer’s emissions evidence ready. Two-wheeled motorcycles, including sidecars, and mopeds are exempt from the separate Congestion Charge. ULEZ motorcycles · Foreign vehicles · Congestion Charge

London’s Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels charge both directions from 06:00 to 22:00, except on 25 December. Auto Pay is required for the off-peak rate; weekday peaks are 06:00–10:00 northbound and 16:00–19:00 southbound. Tunnel charges

From 1 January 2027, a foreign motorcycle without an OBU will pay S$3 for every ERP operational day it travels on Singapore roads, even without crossing a gantry. Vehicle Entry Permit fees and border charges remain separate. Current ERP guidance · 2027 changes

5. Check the final kilometre to your accommodation

Check the hotel’s street, parking entrance and arrival time. A parking reservation does not authorise a restricted approach road.

Ask the property for the permitted motorcycle approach and whether it arranges any local authorisation. Verify that with the responsible authority, especially in a pedestrianised centre: vehicle-access restrictions may exist alongside clean-air rules.

6. Keep your trip note short

Save one line per charge: road or zone; motorcycle category; action; validity; receipt. Double-check the plate’s registration country as well as its characters, and include any later return crossing.

If avoiding a toll adds an hour, compare the extra riding, arrival weather and stops before choosing it. Our first European tour guide helps with realistic overnight plans.
