Choose petrol by its octane rating and ethanol content, using the requirements for your exact motorcycle. Euro 95, Super and Premium are useful names to recognise, but they don't mean the same thing everywhere. Check the pump's specification before lifting the nozzle.
Octane and ethanol answer different questions
Octane measures resistance to knocking. European pumps commonly use RON; US pumps use AKI, shown as (R+M)/2. AKI averages two measurements: Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number. RON alone can't give an exact AKI conversion. Use the rating in your manual or ask the manufacturer for the equivalent. US Energy Information Administration · Technical explanation
E5 means up to 5% ethanol; E10 means up to 10%. E5 doesn't mean ethanol-free, and neither label tells you the octane rating. UK Department for Transport
For example, a bike requiring at least 95 RON and allowing E10 meets those two requirements with 95 RON E10. If it needs 98 RON, choosing 95 E5 doesn't solve the octane shortfall. Likewise, higher octane doesn't make an unsuitable ethanol blend acceptable. Follow any additional requirements in the manual too.

On a Germany–France trip, a bike approved for 95 RON E10 could use a German product marked Super 95 E10 or French SP95-E10. France also has SP95 E5: the octane rating is the same, the ethanol category is different. Nozzle colour and price won't explain that distinction. German supplier example · French government finder
Be especially careful with higher-ethanol products
In the US, E15 is prohibited in motorcycles, including newer ones. Its approval for certain cars and light vehicles doesn't extend to bikes. US EPA
Brazil's regular petrol, including versions with extra additives, uses 32% ethanol under the temporary rule that began on 1 August 2026. CNPE Resolution 9/2026 sets a 180-day period, extendable once for the same duration. Premium remains at 25% ethanol; the standard product's minimum octane remains 94 RON. Recheck ANP's current blend for trips after the temporary period. ANP · CNPE Resolution 9/2026
For a bike approved only for E5 or E10, Brazilian premium isn't an E5 alternative. Get the manufacturer's answer for your model before taking it there. Treat E20, E85 and other unfamiliar blends the same way: check compatibility before filling. Local bikes may have different approval from an imported version.
When premium is worth buying
Buy the octane your manufacturer requires. A higher rating doesn't automatically improve an engine that doesn't need it; distinguish a required grade from one merely recommended for a particular result. US DOE/EPA guidance
A higher grade may still be worth buying if it's the available fuel with an acceptable ethanol content. Check that content separately: “premium” doesn't promise ethanol-free petrol.
Plan the stop as well as the fuel
Use your loaded touring range and have an earlier alternative to a remote station you depend on. France's government finder can help locate particular grades, but confirm opening hours and availability for a stop you can't bypass.
Save the manual's fuel page so you can show an attendant the specification. For a rental, keep the bike's fuelling instructions with its paperwork. Add any refuelling detour to your day's timing; the route-weather guide explains how to check conditions at your expected arrival times.
If you choose the wrong fuel
Stop filling. Tell the station staff which product and how much you added, then contact the rental company, manufacturer or breakdown provider before starting or continuing. The next step depends on the fuel and motorcycle.
One accidental tank of E10 in a non-compatible vehicle is a specific case: UK guidance says draining shouldn't normally be necessary. Get advice for your bike rather than applying that advice to diesel, E85 or another wrong product. UK Department for Transport
Questions riders ask
Is E5 always 98 octane?
No. France's official finder lists both SP95 E5 and SP98 E5. The E label describes ethanol, not octane. French government
Can every modern motorcycle use E10?
Don't apply a car manufacturing-year rule to a motorcycle. Check your exact make, model and market in the manual or a manufacturer-supported tool such as the UK compatibility checker.
Keep the fuel specification and your backup stops with the rest of your travel checklist.
