Motorcycle parking abroad depends on the city and the space you choose. Before leaving the bike, check that parking is allowed, pay any required fee and make sure you can reach the space legally. Being smaller than a car doesn't automatically make pavement parking or a free bay available to you.
Start with the space and its signs
Look for a marked motorcycle bay, then read its payment hours, maximum stay, permit restrictions and temporary notices. Other parked bikes can help you spot a space, but they aren't proof that it's allowed.
Here, pavement, sidewalk and footpath mean the pedestrian space beside the road. A motorcycle bay, bicycle rack and pedestrian-only street each have their own rules. Permission for one doesn't carry over to the others.

Check what free parking actually covers
A free bay may still have a time limit. A fee exemption may need advance registration. And an unmetered space can still be reserved or restricted: read the signs before walking away.
Paris grants eligible electric motorcycles and scooters free authorised surface parking between 09:00 and 20:00. At a paid facility, check the motorcycle rate separately from the car rate. For example, KLCC Basement Car Park in Kuala Lumpur lists motorcycles at RM 2 per entry, alongside hourly car tariffs. KLCC parking operator
Enter the correct registration when paying, and save the confirmation. If an app offers no motorcycle option, check the operator's instructions before choosing another vehicle type.
Check the way in and leave access clear
Permission to park on a footpath doesn't itself allow riding along it. Check the lawful approach, and keep pedestrian routes, dropped kerbs, tactile paving, entrances and emergency access clear.
Vehicle-class markings matter too. At Singapore's URA car parks, a motorcycle must fit wholly within a bay designated for its class; parking across the lines, obstructing access or using an unauthorised reserved space can be an offence. URA parking rules
For a controlled city centre, check the tolls and environmental-zones guide as well. Paying for parking doesn't settle whether your bike may enter the district.
Plan the overnight stop before arriving
Ask accommodation staff what “motorcycle parking” means: a reserved bay, a garage or the street outside? Save the vehicle entrance address and a nearby backup before the final stretch, especially if you'll arrive in rain or after dark.
Choose a suitable surface with room to park and unpack, consider exposure to the weather, and follow the bike and stand manufacturers' instructions. Build the stop into your day's timing using the first-tour planning guide.
A quick check for a lunch stop
Suppose you arrive in Paris and see bikes on a wide pavement, with a marked motorcycle bay across the road. Choose an authorised space, check its signs and arrange the payment or entitlement for your bike. The pavement's width doesn't change the prohibition. Check the area's access conditions separately. In Victoria, the starting rule is different: motorcycles may park on footpaths provided they don't obstruct pedestrians or other vehicles. Signs and lawful access still matter, and the rule doesn't extend to all of Australia. Transport Victoria

Questions riders ask
Is it allowed when I leave plenty of room for pedestrians?
Not necessarily. Paris and San Francisco prohibit pavement parking even if you leave a gap. Victoria follows a different rule, with obstruction among its conditions. Paris · San Francisco · Victoria
Can two motorcycles share one paid car space?
Check the bay's occupancy rules and the payment for each bike. In Paris, payment is linked to the registration, so enter each motorcycle's plate correctly rather than assuming one transaction covers both. City of Paris
Are pedestrian zones and pavements the same thing?
No. A pedestrian-only street has its own access restrictions. A parking space inside it doesn't automatically give you permission to ride through.
Can I use the same parking rules in another city?
Use the next city's signs and council or operator instructions. Even a parking-fee exemption may stop at the city boundary.
Keep your parking note with the rest of your motorcycle travel checklist.
